1. What does society think about Atticus defending Niggers ?
My theory about Atticus defending black people makes society think its wrong to defend black people and most people comment mean stuff about him helping Tom Robinson.
2. How is Scout’s perspective of injustice portrayed?
Atticus taught Scout how to read before she even started school, she has a passion for reading and writing but would never want to stop reading if she wanted to. When she first started going to school Miss Caroline tells her she cant be taught how to read or write. This was her first receiving of injustice because it something she is told something she doesn’t want to do, clearly Scout thinks Miss Caroline is a bad teacher and doesn’t want to obey her. Jem defends Miss Caroline telling Scout it’s a new way of teaching without using books, of course Scout thinks this idea is obsurred.
3. Where do you see injustice?
Specifically I see injustice in Boo Radley, because he has a history of starting with being a nice boy to a grown man trapped in his house for years. Many people said he stabbed a scissor in his father’s leg and became more violent and crazy, possibly may have committed other crimes. The people of Maycomb are terrified of him because they suppose he will kill other people. Some are even so terrified of him that they wouldn’t even walk by their house and what is said most about him are rumors. When finally Miss Maudie tells Scout that Boo in reality wasn’t crazy as a boy, and was just misunderstood. Then after when he grew up and stabbed his father he was trapped in his house for years and “the house was still”. Boo had lived a lifetime of injustice living trapped in his house, and never leaving the house made people think something was wrong.
4. As the title of the book says: "To kill a Mockingbird", where do you think this title falls into plot of the book? What does it really mean?
The title “To Kill a Mockingbird” means to not kill the good people, the ones who are not worth killing for and those who didn’t do anything wrong. Tom Robinson is a great example in this novel because he was accused of rape, which is something he never did and possibly lead to lynching. Atticus tells Jem and Scout to “shoot all the blue jays you want, but it is a sin to kill a mockingbird”. There is a similar meaning tying towards the kids, that its important to choose to not shoot the good ones.
5. What makes Atticus´s role so important in the book?
Besides that Atticus is a father, he is an important lawyer to Maycomb. Atticus is the peacemaker in this novel, I see him as a person helping others no matter what class, gender, or race they are. He sees that the town should be one whole so that the people can be united and help each other. In the town there’s issues going on with race, most of the town doesn’t appreciate black people and those who do especially Atticus, get mean comments about it. This is injustice that people go against him while he is trying to help black people and at the same time get rejected by society. He is an important role in the book because he has a voice, he has the freedom of speech to support those (Tom Robinson) but Atticus has not enough people to support him.
6. What do you think the "Radley place" meant for Jem?
The Radley place meant nothing to Jem except that he could spend his time exploring and being curious enough to sneek the property to see Boo Radley.
7. Was it fair for Mr. Nathan Radley to fill up the hole?
I reckon that Nathan filled up the hole when he found out Boo Radley was trying to make contact with Jem and Scout by putting presents in the knothole. This has brought unfairness to Boo Radley because he can’t leave the house, he gets lonely locked up in his room from the world. Now that Nathan filled up the hole with cement in the oak tree, Boo lost his connection to the world and would go back to living a depressing life.
8. What character do you think will lead to the climax? Why?
Tom Robinson has already lead to the climax because his accusation of raping a white woman is sending him to be lynched. Apart from the whole town talking about this case and blaming it on the black person, none of this was this fault.
9. What can the novel tell you about historical events?
The novel portrays how the 1930s took place, in the south of the US people were diverse and lived in a diverse life. People who were black were very unappreciated and had no freedom of speech or any rights. They were the ones who fitted in a low class with low wages, and did everything that the white people commanded them to do. Blacks were often unfairly committed for crimes they didn’t commit, and often they get lynched. This novel consists of the American south and African-American civil rights movement.
10. What message do you think Harper Lee wanted to give through this book?
“The author believes that justice and injustice is limited or unlimited”. Justice and injustice is limited in this novel, blacks cant have any rights yet they get blamed for stuff they didn’t do. White men have all the rights and all the power they consider their actions and decisions as justice, for example accusing a colored person with no evidence and getting hate.
11. Is Scout a "trouble maker" or do you think she´s just a curious girl?
I believe Scout isn’t much of a troublemaker, her personality fits into being outgoing and adventurous. She doesn’t tend to get in trouble, she wants to find out what’s going on even if she has to do the most bravest move. Her curiosity shows how much she wants to dig deeper, especially when she wanted to find out about Boo Radley. She tries to escape the Radley property and hears a gun shot in the distance. Though she can be a bit of a troublemaker, she behaves like a tomboy and also fights with boys. Such as when she beats up Francis for calling Atticus a “nigger lover”, and yet she gets blamed for the beating but Francis gets beaten for his lying and attitude.
Open Ended Questions
1. Have you liked the book so far? Where has tension build up?
So far I like the book, its very detailed and it shows character’s emotions in every scene. In each chapter so far there has been tension, but the most tension so far in my own opinion was when Jem, Dill, and Scout were trying to escape the Radley property after they saw a shadow of a man with a hat and hearing a gun shot.
2. What does the book tell us about society?
The book tells us a variety of things about society, To Kill a Mockingbird has a very diverse society in a way people don't mingle in with each other. Maycomb is described as a "old town" where people have nowhere to go, and most of all small town, more problems and more gossip goes around. Society in this book shows that specifically white people were very racist, and the town was segregated amongst the whites and the blacks. As years went by there were places titled for black or white only. White people were the top of the social class looking down upon the "lesser" society, the blacks. Whites had every right to do what they wanted, but as for the blacks they had lived a limited life with restrictions.
3. Do you think Scout´s mother´s death creates a big downfall for the family?
I don’t think that the mother’s death caused a downfall in the family, not as much for Scout because she was a baby when she died. On the other hand there is Jem and Atticus, both Jem and Atticus don’t seem to mention her that much because both didn’t have fond memories of her and didn’t want to go back to memory lane again.
4. Would Scout be different if her mother was alive? Why or why not?
I doubt that Scout would be different if her mother was alive, she grew up to be a tomboy because she had no mother. Even if her mother was still alive I don’t think that her mother would change Scout into someone she doesn’t want to be, but still teach her manners to act lady-like and polite to others.
5. What character do you relate to the most?
I relate to none of the characters in the book.
6. Is Atticus being too protective to his children?
My thoughts on Atticus shows that part of him acts more like a mentor than a father towards Jem and Scout. He gives great advice to his kids and guides them as they mature but he doesn’t show that he is too protective over his children. He rarely tells them to stay away from danger but usually someone who I would consider my therapist.
7. Name a negative aspect about Scout.
She isn’t afraid to say something back or beat up someone when they call Atticus a “nigger lover”.
8. What makes Jem and Scout so different?
Scout is a very educated girl, she learned how to read before she even started school. Scout yet may be very intelligent but she isn’t so lady-like, she beats up boys and isn’t afraid to speak up. As a tomboy, she is very outgoing and adventurous also shows she can do the same stuff the boys are doing in the book. Jem is also adventurous just like Scout, but Jem listens and obeys when Atticus gives advice.

Maurizio's Questions:
1. Who do you think is a better parent? Aunt Alexandra or Atticus?
I think that Atticus was a better parent than Aunt Alexandra. Atticus was dedicated, patient, and understanding with his kids. He was always giving his children life lessons on how to be a better person and enjoy their lives. Atticus also tried to protect his kids from everything that could hurt them. Aunt Alexandra was not such a good mother, not even a good aunt.
2. Why do you think Boo Radley left all those gifts in the tree?
I think that Boo Radley left all the gifts in the tree to surprise them and change their perspective about him. After being in his house for so many years he probably wanted to be friends with the kids, communicate with them, and make them see that he was actually a nice person.
3. Why do you think boo Radley never comes out of his house?
I think that Boo Radley never comes out of his house because his has such a terrible family that all of his family members don’t let him come out to the real world, make friends and be happy.
4. Did tom Robinson have a legitimate chance of surviving?
Tom Robinson did not have a chance to survive because he was still going to be accused guilty in the future. Since people were so racist back then they probably wuld never let him have a chance to be seen as a good person in society and everyone would know about him for being in jail before.
5. Why do you think Bob Ewell wanted to “get” Atticus?
What Bob Ewell meant was that he wanted to do something bad to Atticus since he was telling everyone the truth about how things happened. Atticus was defending a negro and this also made people hold anger towards him.
6. What do you think actually happened to bob Ewell? Do you think he actually fell on the knife?
What happened to him is that he was stabbed. He did not fall for the knife, he was killed by Boo Radley, not by Jem.
7. Do you think Tom Robinson was actually shot because he was escaping?
I think that the reason that he escaped from jail was because he did not have any hopes in winning, trust in that they were going to believe what he said after all, and to be seen well in society after being accused by Bob Ewell for this kind of big things.
8. Did bob Ewell deserve to die? Why or why not?
Personally, I think that I don’t have the right to say if someone should die or not, however with what has happened in the book Mr. Bob Ewell was a bad guy that deserved to have consequences for his actions… like to be put in jail for killing someone and raping his daughter.
9. If you were Boo radley, what would you have done? What would you have done differently?
First of all if I were Boo I would not have killed him. I think that by killing him he did not make him learn a lesson, he even made it worse for himself. Even though Bob Ewell was a horrible person, I think that it is better to make him suffering by humiliating him in front of everyone in the Maycomb County.
10. How would the ending of the book be different if the setting was changed to modern times? What would stay the same?
If it was modern day, most f the racism represented in the book would have changed. Today white and black people can be friends not being rude to each other. I think that if it were today, they would have more resources that could determine if Tom Robinson was really the guilty one. For this reason I think that he would probably not be killed after all and Bob Ewell could be sent to jail instead of him.
